Lesson 5: Bewilderment in affairs of religion, and a base man stealing dervishes’ words
Couplet 311
کار بی‌چون را که کیفیت نهد
اینکه گفتم هم ضرورت می‌دهد
اینکه گفتم هم ضرورت می‌دهد
Who shall describe the action of Him who has no like? This that I have said was only out of necessity.
Couplet 312
گه چنین بنماید و گه ضد این
جز که حیرانی نباشد کار دین
جز که حیرانی نباشد کار دین
At times, the action of God shows itself thus, and at other times, the very opposite; the work of religion is nothing but bewilderment.
Couplet 313
نی چنان حیران که پشتش سوی اوست
بل چنین حیران و غرق و مست دوست
بل چنین حیران و غرق و مست دوست
Not the bewilderment of one who has turned his back on Him, but rather the bewilderment of one drowned in God and intoxicated with the Beloved.
Couplet 314
آن یکی را روی او شد سوی دوست
و آن یکی را روی او خود روی اوست
و آن یکی را روی او خود روی اوست
The face of one is turned towards the Beloved, while the face of the other has itself become the Beloved’s face.
Couplet 315
روی هر یک می‌نگر می‌دار پاس
بو که گردی تو ز خدمت روشناس
بو که گردی تو ز خدمت روشناس
Look closely upon the face of each and keep watch, so that through devoted service to them you may come to know the face (of human devils from the friends of God).
Couplet 316
چون بسی ابلیس آدم‌روی هست
پس به هر دستی نشاید داد دست
پس به هر دستی نشاید داد دست
Since there are many devils who have the face of Adam, one must not shake hands and pledge allegiance to just anyone.
Couplet 317
زان که صیاد آورد بانگ صفیر
تا فریبد مرغ را آن مرغ‌گیر
تا فریبد مرغ را آن مرغ‌گیر
Because the fowler mimics the bird’s own call and whistle, so that the bird-catcher may lure and trap the bird.
Couplet 318
بشنود آن مرغ بانگ جنس خویش
از هوا آید بیابد دام و نیش
از هوا آید بیابد دام و نیش
That bird hears the call of its own kind and descends from the sky, only to find a snare and a sting awaiting it.
Couplet 319
حرف درویشان بدزدد مرد دون
تا بخواند بر سلیمی زان فسون
تا بخواند بر سلیمی زان فسون
The vile man steals the words of the dervishes so that he may chant those spells to deceive a naive and pure-hearted soul.
Couplet 320
کار مردان روشنی و گرمی است
کار دونان حیله و بی‌شرمی است
کار دونان حیله و بی‌شرمی است
The work of holy men is as light and heat, while the work of vile men is deceit and shamelessness.
Couplet 321
شیر پشمین از برای کد کنند
بومسیلم را لقب احمد کنند
بومسیلم را لقب احمد کنند
They fashion a woollen lion merely to beg and bestow the title of Ahmad (Prophet Muhammad) upon a false prophet like Bu Musaylim.
Couplet 322
بومسیلم را لقب کذاب ماند
مر محمد را اولوالالباب ماند
مر محمد را اولوالالباب ماند
But to Bu Musaylim remained attached the title of Kadhdhab (Liar), while to Muhammad remained attached the title of Ulu ’l-albab (Endowed with wisdom).
Couplet 323
آن شراب حق ختامش مشک ناب
باده را ختمش بود گند و عذاب
باده را ختمش بود گند و عذاب
The divine wine seals its end with pure musk, whereas the worldly wine ends in stench and torment.
